Mele Tūtū brings family stories to life at Hawaiian Mission Houses
Hawaiian Mission Houses is putting on a night of Hawaiian music and family history this Saturday, a light-hearted break from the heavier programs the site usually hosts.
- The theme came out of hula teachers sharing the songs their grandparents passed down to them.
- Dancers dug into their own family stories, including a wartime romance on Niihau and the origins of a favorite flower.
- One song written decades ago for a well-known lei maker has not been performed in 30 years; the words and melody were tracked down through the Bishop Museum and older musicians who still carry them by memory.
- Expect backyard favorites from the 1930s and 40s, Royal Hawaiian Hotel standards, and a sing-along crowd.
- Doors open at 5:30 with a bar and charcuterie for sale; tickets are on the Mission Houses website.
Outlook: More events follow, with an Ohana Day in November, a craft fair after Thanksgiving, and a City Lights program.
