Maruki Tei to Close After More Than 60 Years
A Windward Oahu restaurant that has fed local families since 1958 is shutting down at the end of October, closing another chapter of old-school Hawaii.
- Maruki Tei at Windward Mall will serve its last meals on October 30 as the owners retire.
- The restaurant was started by grandmother Edith Oshima in 1958 and stayed in the family for more than six decades.
- Longtime customers are being urged to come in for a final plate of favorites like the crab roll and maki zushi.
- The closure lands the same week Hawaii lost pioneering lawmaker Patsy Saiki, who died at 96, and Holei Sea Arch collapsed into the ocean on Hawaii Island after thousands of years.
- Kilauea is showing more activity, with magma on the move and dozens of small earthquakes in a single day.
Outlook: Expect long lines at Maruki Tei through the end of October, and more pressure on the shrinking number of family-run local eateries.
