A long-running Honolulu community production of the Ramayana moves to the historic Hawaii Theatre this year, a step up for a volunteer arts group.

• Still and Moving Center is staging its Diwali retelling of the Ramayana for the 16th year, its first at the Hawaii Theatre.
• The cast is made up of volunteers aged 5 to 85 — staff, teachers, and members rather than professional actors.
• The ancient epic is condensed into one evening, following an exiled prince and princess and the kidnapping that drives the story.
• Dance styles from the center's classes carry the plot: Argentine tango, capoeira for the battle scenes, hula, belly dance, and classical Indian bharatanatyam and garba, with live chanted mantra.

Outlook: The bigger stage gives the group its widest audience yet, with the show set to keep its mix-of-cultures Hawaii flavor.
