A former Border Patrol commander made a wildly inflated claim about illegal immigration on a popular podcast without being challenged, and government data flatly contradicts him.

• Greg Bovino said 107 million people are in the US illegally — a third of the population, and far above even the most hawkish estimates of around 11 to 50 million.
• Because about 70% of the country is white, the number lines up almost exactly with every non-white person in America.
• He also claimed the Trump administration has stopped enforcing immigration law, but ICE arrests hit record highs this summer and are closing in on 2,000 a day.
• Most of those arrested had no criminal charge beyond immigration status, and fewer than 4% had a past violent conviction.
• Bovino says he believes the administration wants him dead after his security detail was pulled — but that happens routinely to officials who leave government.

Outlook: Trump's approval on immigration has gone underwater with two-thirds of Americans opposing mass deportations, which is why Bovino was pushed out and why the hardest-line approach is unlikely to return.
