Six Hawaii captains and navigators have earned the sacred title of Pwo master navigator, a milestone for traditional Pacific wayfinding.

• The induction took place July 30 in Hawaii's Ko'olau Valley on Oahu.
• Archie Kalepa, Kala'i Murphy, Lehua Kamalu, Pomai Bertelmann, Chantel Ching and Russell Amimoto received the honor.
• The women among them are the first in Hawaii ever to earn the title.
• The ceremony also honored the late master navigator Mau Piailug, who revived Hawaiian voyaging traditions.
• Becoming Pwo takes decades of training in navigation, voyaging, teaching and community service.

Outlook: The new navigators are expected to lead voyages and train the next generation of wayfinders.
