Nvidia's AI backlog surge and the circular money behind it

Aug 27, 2026

Nvidia's blowout forecast looks less like organic demand and more like recycled capital, which is good for the hardware trade right now but a warning sign for later.

  • Google and SpaceX raised over $160 billion for AI infrastructure this year, and Nvidia promptly raised next year's growth forecast by about the same amount.
  • Nvidia now guides to 70% growth instead of 48%, and says supply is the only thing capping it — the stock jumped on that.
  • Much of the money is circular: Nvidia guaranteed roughly $105 billion behind an OpenAI project that buys back close to a full quarter of its own data center sales.
  • The underlying economics are slipping — Anthropic just locked in compute far cheaper per gigawatt than Elon Musk's revenue math assumes, stretching payback from under a year to three or four.
  • AI labs look profitable mainly because training costs get excluded, a claim that gets tested whenever Anthropic files to go public.

Outlook: The hardware rally likely keeps running while the money keeps flowing, and the real danger comes when a frontier AI company goes public and investors stop funding the spending.
