Work and Classes Suspended Tuesday in Eight Mountain Townships and Some Coastal Villages of Pingtung County
Heavy rain is shutting down work and school across mountain and coastal parts of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan on Tuesday, a safety call that disrupts daily life but is meant to prevent deaths.
- Eight mountain townships in Pingtung — including Wutai, Sandimen, Majia, Laiyi, Taiwu, Chunri, Shizi and Mudan — will close offices and schools Tuesday.
- Several coastal villages in Donggang, Fangliao and Jiadong are also shut after days of flooding.
- Forecasters expect extremely heavy rain to keep falling over the mountains through Tuesday.
- Days of downpours have loosened hillside soil, raising the risk of landslides and mudflows.
- Everywhere else in the county stays open as normal.
Outlook: Closures could be extended if the rain keeps up, with landslides the main danger once the ground is this saturated.
