Semiconductor materials alliance launched in Taiwan

Aug 21, 2026

Taiwan is pushing to become the place where the next generation of chip materials gets invented and tested first, a bid that could strengthen its grip on the global chip supply chain.

  • SEMI has set up a new semiconductor materials alliance, co-chaired by GlobalWafers chair Doris Hsu.
  • The argument: new materials should be defined, trialled and proven in Taiwan before going global, instead of Taiwan just following orders from customers.
  • Chipmaking has moved past plain silicon and purity — advanced packaging and AI chips now need materials like silicon carbide and gallium nitride, plus specialty chemicals and gases.
  • Some of these materials are in short supply worldwide, and Taiwan already controls the know-how for part of them.
  • Taiwan has many small "hidden champions" with niche technology that few outside the industry notice; the alliance wants them visible and partnered with big international firms.

Outlook: Expect more joint ventures and local partnerships as foreign materials companies look for Taiwanese partners close to the chip fabs.
