Former TSMC engineer ran underground Taiwan–Korea money exchange ring laundering NT$3.4 billion

Taiwanese police have broken up an underground currency exchange ring that moved billions through a fake freight business, a win for financial regulators but a sign of how easily crypto can be used to hide money trails.

  • A former TSMC engineer led the group, which used a Taipei international shipping company as cover for illegal Taiwan–Korea currency swaps since 2018.
  • Clients were mostly shop owners buying clothing wholesale in Seoul's Dongdaemun district, funneled in through WeChat groups.
  • Money came in as Taiwan dollars, got converted to crypto on a local exchange, then moved through offshore platforms and cold wallets before landing in Korean accounts — breaking the paper trail at every step.
  • The ring handled NT$3.4 billion over eight years and skimmed a 2–3% fee, pocketing around NT$68 million.
  • Eleven people were arrested; police also seized cash, a Tesla and luxury watches, and detained building staff who tipped off one suspect during the raid.

Outlook: The main suspects are out on bail while prosecutors in Taipei build a case under banking and anti-money-laundering laws.
