Etihad Airways calls Taiwan "China Taiwan" in cabin announcement, Taipei demands apology
Taiwan's foreign ministry has lodged a formal protest against Etihad Airways after a flight's Chinese-language announcement referred to the island as "China Taiwan," a fresh sign of pressure on airlines to follow Beijing's wording.
- A passenger flying home from Abu Dhabi found the English announcement said "welcome back to Taiwan" while the Chinese version said "welcome back to China Taiwan."
- The same Chinese announcement warned that bringing in meat products would draw a fine from "the Chinese government."
- Taipei's foreign ministry called the wording a downgrade of Taiwan's status and said the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other.
- The ministry has told its Dubai office and the civil aviation authority to press Etihad's headquarters and its Taiwan representatives for a correction, an apology, and changes.
Outlook: Taipei says it will keep watching how Etihad responds, and the case adds to a long-running fight over how foreign airlines label Taiwan.
