Huang Kuo-chang Wins Case Over Calling Mirror Media "Trash Media"; Appeals Court Rules No Damages Owed

Aug 19, 2026

The Taiwan High Court has rejected an appeal by Mirror Media, upholding a ruling that Taiwan People's Party chairman Huang Kuo-chang does not have to pay damages. The decision is a significant win for the latitude politicians have to criticise the media, and a setback for outlets that sue to protect their commercial reputation.

  • Huang Kuo-chang repeatedly denounced Mirror Media in public during 2024 as "trash media" and "a hatchet man for the green camp and the Taipei District Prosecutors Office," prompting a claim for NT$1 million in damages.
  • The court of first instance ruled that he owed nothing, and the High Court likewise ruled against Mirror Media on appeal.
  • The court held that the remarks were reasonable comment on matters of public affairs, and that media outlets should show a degree of tolerance towards criticism.
  • The High Court further said that Mirror Media could produce no evidence that its commercial reputation had actually been damaged, and that in the online marketplace of opinion others would naturally offer rebuttals.
  • The case stems from Mirror Media's series of reports on the Core Pacific City case involving Ko Wen-je, which Huang Kuo-chang has accused of quoting out of context and serving political manoeuvring.

Outlook: The case remains open to further appeal; if Mirror Media is dissatisfied with the ruling, it may appeal again to the Supreme Court.
