Free tree and debris removal offered in Puna and Hilo after storm

Aug 19, 2026

Power is slowly coming back across Hawaii after storm damage, and free cleanup help is now available on Hawaii Island — good news for residents, though tens of thousands are still in the dark.

  • An islandwide junk removal crew is clearing fallen trees, branches, and storm debris for free in the Puna and Hilo districts, excavator included.
  • Hawaiian Electric crews are working around the clock, but Kauai and Hawaii Island still have the biggest outages, with Oahu and Maui smaller.
  • Oahu's water pumps are affected too, so several areas are asked to conserve, and four hydrants are open for people to fill containers.
  • Downed power lines should be treated as live, and dark traffic lights are four-way stops — police are ticketing drivers who blow through them.
  • Storm-displaced native seabirds should be boxed gently in a ventilated container and reported to the Hawaii Wildlife Center, not fed or given water.

Outlook: Repairs should keep chipping away at the outage numbers over the next few days, with the hardest-hit rural areas on Hawaii Island and Kauai last to come back.
