Murder suspect in Kalihi stabbing of gas station cashier makes first court appearance
A Honolulu man accused of killing a gas station worker over a stolen can of alcohol appeared in court for the first time, a tragic case that's bad news for retail workers already dealing with increasing in-store violence.
- Alexis Aino, 23, is charged with murder and robbery after allegedly stabbing 66-year-old cashier Celeste Guzman in the neck with a kitchen knife.
- Court documents say the attack started when Guzman asked him to pay for alcohol he'd stolen and started drinking in the store.
- Police arrived to find Aino still holding the knife and the stolen can, and had to use a stun gun after he refused to drop the weapon.
- A nearby security guard said this kind of confrontation isn't rare, describing frequent loitering, intoxicated customers, and fights at convenience stores, especially at night.
- Aino is being held on a million dollars bail.
Outlook: Aino is due back in court Monday as the case moves forward.
