Kamehameha Butterfly Mosaic Unveiled at Honolulu Zoo
A new piece of public art celebrating one of Hawaii's two native butterfly species went up at the Honolulu Zoo, a feel-good local story with no market or political angle.
- A Waikiki art program partnered with the zoo on a large ceramic mosaic of the Kamehameha butterfly's wings.
- Kids from multiple grade levels helped make it: younger students painted the original wing designs, while third graders cut and fired the ceramic pieces.
- The project took three years to complete and now sits near another butterfly-themed artwork at the zoo.
- It highlights the Kamehameha butterfly, one of only two butterfly species native to Hawaii.
Outlook: The mosaic becomes a permanent fixture and new photo spot for zoo visitors.
