Gov. Green announces Hawaii's Opportunity Zones 2.0 designations

Nov 06, 2026

Hawaii has picked 25 neighborhoods to get special federal tax breaks meant to attract investment, which is good news for property owners and developers in those areas.

Governor Josh Green named the areas as part of a federal program called Opportunity Zones 2.0. Investors who put money into businesses or property in these zones can get tax benefits, which is designed to pull in development and jobs.

Nineteen of the 25 areas are on Oahu, including Chinatown, Waikiki, and Kalihi. Four are on Hawaii Island and two are on Maui.

Rural areas among the 25 get extra benefits on top of the standard perks, making them even more attractive to outside investors.

Outlook: Expect developers and investors to start looking more closely at these neighborhoods, especially Chinatown and Kalihi, as the tax incentives kick in.
