Fan Yun Elected Executive Vice President of Liberal International
Taiwan's democracy camp scored a diplomatic win as DPP legislator Fan Yun was elected Executive Vice President of Liberal International with the most votes of any candidate, a boost for Taiwan's international standing and a setback for Beijing's efforts to isolate it.
- Liberal International, a global alliance of liberal political parties, held its general assembly jointly in Thailand and Taiwan this year, the first time in 15 years it returned to Asia and the first time ever held in Taiwan.
- China reportedly pressured the organization through multiple channels to block or downplay the Taiwan event, but the group's leadership pushed back and held the assembly anyway.
- Delegates also passed three resolutions backing Taiwan, affirming its democratic resilience and stating that democratic Taiwan is not subordinate to authoritarian China.
- Fan Yun's win gives Taiwan a seat back in the group's leadership core, following Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim's earlier role, and she says it opens new channels to push Taiwan's cause through the organization's UN-linked advocacy work.
Outlook: Fan Yun will spend the next two years working with the group's leadership team from the UK, Denmark, Finland, Lebanon, and Ivory Coast, aiming to turn this support into concrete cross-border human rights and political cooperation that gives Taiwan more international visibility.
