Inside election night with Kauai mayoral candidates Carvalho and Rapozo
Kauai's mayoral race came down to the wire between incumbent Bernard Carvalho and challenger Mel Rapozo, with neither candidate projecting confidence going into the final count.
Carvalho, who trailed Rapozo after the primary, said he leaned on door-to-door campaigning across the west side and north shore to close the gap, including help delivering fuel and supplies after a recent storm hit the island.
Rapozo, who led after the primary, said his campaign shifted away from formal events and fundraisers toward direct outreach once the storm hit, focusing on registered voters who skipped the primary but could still turn out for the general. He named fixing storm-damaged infrastructure and restoring basic services as his top priorities if elected.
Both candidates struck a similar tone, thanking supporters and volunteers for sticking with lengthy, storm-disrupted campaigns regardless of the outcome.
Outlook: Full results were still pending as both camps waited anxiously, with the winner facing a costly, long-term recovery and infrastructure rebuild as an immediate first task in office.
