Former Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho is on track to lose his comeback bid, trailing fellow council member Mel Rapozo by a wide margin on election night, though he says he isn't conceding yet.

• Rapozo holds a commanding lead over Carvalho in early results for Kauai mayor.
• Carvalho, who already served 10 years as mayor, says he's still hopeful final numbers could shift but is prepared for either outcome.
• He described the race as a clash of leadership styles rather than policy, saying voters may have wanted change after his long tenure.
• Carvalho and Rapozo have a long personal relationship and he says he'll support the next administration regardless of the outcome.
• He signaled interest in staying involved in local government or business going forward, possibly after a break.

Outlook: Barring a major shift in remaining vote counts, Rapozo is set to become Kauai's next mayor, with Carvalho expected to step back from office while keeping the door open to future public roles.
