A student at Baldwin High School in Wailuku, Maui, was arrested for assault after a video showed him attacking another boy who was simply trying to walk away.

• The footage shows the attacker kicking and punching the victim, who falls after a kick to the head, while bystanders film and laugh instead of stepping in.
• Maui police call the attack "unacceptable," stressing the victim never fought back and was trying to defuse the situation.
• The school district sent parents a letter acknowledging the incident only after a local news outlet asked for details, three days after it happened.
• Police added a second student resource officer at the school in response, and say they're working to make sure students feel safe on campus.

Outlook: The case moves forward as a criminal matter, with the school facing pressure to show it's improving campus safety and response time.
