China sends 18 aircraft across the Taiwan Strait median line in coordinated drill with warships

Oct 31, 2026

China ramped up military pressure on Taiwan again, sending warplanes across the sensitive middle line of the Taiwan Strait alongside navy ships — bad news for the already tense relationship between the two sides.

Taiwan's defense ministry said it tracked 22 Chinese military aircraft, including fighter jets, radar planes, and drones, operating in the area. Of those, 18 flew past the midpoint line that has long served as an unofficial boundary, entering airspace near northern, central, and southwestern Taiwan as well as the wider western Pacific.

China paired the flights with warship movements, calling it a routine "joint combat readiness patrol." Taiwan's military called it harassment and said it tracked the activity closely using radar and surveillance, keeping jets, ships, and land-based missile units ready to respond.

  • 18 of 22 Chinese aircraft sorties crossed the Taiwan Strait median line.
  • Chinese warships moved in coordination with the aircraft.
  • China frames it as a routine patrol; Taiwan calls it harassment.
  • Taiwan's military stayed on alert with jets, ships, and missile defenses.

Outlook: These incursions have become a near-daily pattern and are likely to continue, keeping tensions high across the Strait.
