September Tourism Report Shows Hurricane Impact On Hawaii Visitor Numbers

Oct 30, 2026

Hawaii tourism took a hit in September as two hurricanes kept visitors away, which is bad news for the islands' hotels and businesses that depend on tourist spending.

Total visitors came in under 673,000, down 4% from last September, and the number of visitor days fell 14%. Visitor spending topped $1.4 billion but was still down 9% from a year earlier.

Kauai was hit hardest, with visitors down 35% as the storms battered the island directly. Maui saw an 11% drop and Honolulu fell 8%, while the Big Island held up best with only a slight decline.

Despite the weak visitor numbers, hotel finances weren't all bad: luxury hotel revenue per room was reported up more than 8%, showing high-end travelers are still spending even as overall visitor counts slip.

Outlook: Expect tourism numbers to recover once storm season passes, but Kauai's steep drop may take longer to bounce back from.
