Taiwan Hosts Saint Lucia's Prime Minister, Thanks Ally for Backing Its Global Role
Taiwan rolled out a warm welcome for one of its few remaining diplomatic allies, a quiet but useful win for Taipei as it tries to hold onto shrinking international recognition.
- Saint Lucia's Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre arrived in Taiwan for a state visit, greeted personally by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung at the airport.
- At a welcome lunch, Lin thanked Saint Lucia for consistently backing Taiwan's bid to take part in international organizations, calling it proof of a strong friendship between the two countries.
- Pierre said he wants to deepen cooperation beyond existing programs in agriculture, education, and youth and women's empowerment, adding culture and creative industries as new areas.
- Officials from both sides also discussed setting up a joint "Taiwan-Caribbean" institute and boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
Outlook: Expect continued low-key diplomatic engagement as Taiwan works to shore up support from its remaining allies amid pressure from China.
