Honolulu police have opened several animal cruelty investigations after witnesses reported cats and kittens being thrown from moving cars onto freeways — disturbing news for pet owners and animal welfare groups on Oahu.

• Three separate drivers described seeing kittens tossed from vehicles on different stretches of freeway since mid-September.
• One witness on the H-1 near Waimalu saw a kitten thrown ahead of her and run over by the car in front.
• Another driver spotted a kitten barely alive on the shoulder of the H-1 near Kapiolani Medical Center just days ago.
• Honolulu police have opened four separate animal cruelty investigations since the start of September.
• The Hawaiian Humane Society is aware of the reports and is asking anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.

Outlook: Police and the Humane Society are urging drivers to stay alert and report sightings as the investigations continue.
