OHA to produce televised candidate forums
Hawaii voters are getting televised forums for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs races, a first that should help people fill in a part of the ballot most usually leave blank.
- Statewide general election forums for OHA trustee seats will air three nights running, starting with the Oahu race, then Maui, then the at-large seats.
- Every voter in Hawaii can vote in all OHA trustee races, Hawaiian or not — a point most voters do not realize.
- The forums will cover military land leases, public trust money, and water rights on Maui, issues that reach beyond Native Hawaiians.
- Six candidates are competing for three at-large seats, with incumbents Brickwood Galuteria, John Waihee IV, and Keoni Souza defending against challengers.
- OHA's nine trustees oversee a trust worth more than $1 billion, making the board one of only a few statewide offices on the ballot alongside the U.S. Senate seats and governor.
Outlook: Ballots arrive this weekend, and the push is to cut down the number of voters who skip the OHA section entirely.
