FlyDubai cockpit stabbing forces emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
A co-pilot stabbed the captain on a Dubai–Tel Aviv flight carrying mostly Israeli passengers, a frightening incident that ended without deaths but left the motive unknown.
- FlyDubai flight 1073, with 180 people aboard, dropped from 34,000 feet and briefly nosedived over the desert near the Saudi–Jordan border.
- Someone in the cockpit set off emergency distress codes signaling a general emergency and unlawful interference, and the Boeing 737 Max landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
- Three Israeli passengers forced their way in with the crew's help and handcuffed the attacker; both pilots went to the hospital, and the captain was the one stabbed.
- Israel scrambled fighter jets when the distress signal came through, then pulled them back once the plane was down.
- No group has claimed responsibility and there is no evidence yet tying the attacker to any organization, leaving a lone attacker or a mental health crisis equally possible.
Outlook: Saudi and Israeli investigators will dig into the co-pilot's motive, and until they report, calling it terrorism is guesswork.
