Damien Memorial School renames itself Saint Damien School
An O'ahu Catholic school has taken the name Saint Damien School, a milestone its community has waited on for years.
- The new name honors Father Damien, canonized in 2009, who spent his life caring for Hansen's disease patients in Hawaii.
- Students, teachers, families, and alumni marked the change at a Sunday Mass held on the anniversary of the canonization.
- Supporters called the timing right, saying the change had been in the works since the canonization itself.
- The school, founded in 1962, is also planning upgrades to its campus.
Outlook: Expect the campus improvement plans to move forward under the new name.
