Hawaii Honor Flight veterans tour historic aircraft at Smithsonian aviation museum
Hawaii veterans on an Honor Flight spent the day among historic warplanes in Virginia, a feel-good close to their trip to the nation's capital.
- Volunteer guides walked the group through hangars holding more than 200 aircraft and spacecraft at the Udvar-Hazy Center outside Washington.
- The veterans saw planes from their own years of service, plus the Enola Gay, the bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
- One flying boat on display was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and survived the attack.
- Restoration crews are still working on planes tied to major moments in world history.
- The day ended with the veterans swapping stories, singing, and dancing to Hawaiian songs with a Washington-based hula group.
Outlook: The group is flying home now and is due back in Honolulu shortly.
