Taiwan and Sweden push for closer ties and resilient supply chains

Oct 09, 2026

Taiwan is using its national day reception in Stockholm to court Swedish lawmakers and business, a positive sign for Taipei's push to deepen ties with European democracies.

  • Taiwan's envoy in Sweden called for building a resilient Taiwan-Sweden supply chain, with cooperation in AI, drones, smart healthcare, digital innovation, defense technology and green energy.
  • Nearly 20 Swedish lawmakers from across party lines attended, alongside government officials, diplomats, business and academic figures.
  • The head of the Sweden-Taiwan parliamentary friendship group said Sweden has much to learn from Taiwan on civil defense, social resilience and countering disinformation, and backed Taiwan's participation in international bodies.
  • This year's theme, "A Trusted Partner, A Shared Future," pushes Taiwan's self-positioning as a trusted technology hub.
  • One Swedish lawmaker was warned by organizers of an August choir competition in Helsingborg for posing with Taiwan's flag, and said he ignored the complaint on free-speech grounds.

Outlook: Expect more Taiwan-Sweden exchanges in tech and defense, with China likely to keep objecting to displays of Taiwanese symbols at international events.
