Wai Wednesday: Paul Dunlap Jr. going solo
Hawaii musician Paul Dunlap Jr. is launching a solo career focused on traditional Hawaiian music, good news for fans of the falsetto style.
- Dunlap, who grew up in Waimanalo and graduated from Kamehameha in 1999, is stepping out on his own after years playing with Kailua Boys and with his sister Jasmine as Ka'iona.
- He says Hawaiian music was always his calling, and he is leaning into falsetto singing in the tradition of Dennis Pavao and Hui 'Ohana.
- His new single came out in early October, a throwback to old-school traditional Hawaiian sound.
- He plays venues around Honolulu and posts his schedule on Instagram.
- The appearance is part of the Board of Water Supply's Conservation Concert Series, which is also pushing a rebate on rain barrels for home water use.
Outlook: Dunlap plans to build out more traditional Hawaiian music work, with live dates around town and more recordings likely to follow.
