Some summit trails closed as Kilauea activity continues
Kilauea is building toward another eruption, and the national park is closing trails to keep visitors away from the summit.
- More than 200 shallow earthquakes have hit below the Kilauea summit in the past week.
- The shaking has knocked rocks loose inside the crater and opened new cracks on the caldera floor.
- The park closed the Halema'uma'u Trail and part of the Byron Ledge Trail, with other viewing spots shut last week.
- A new eruption is expected soon, either inside the crater or out of the summit cracks.
- It has been 43 days since the last lava fountain event.
Outlook: Expect fresh lava at the summit in the near term, with more closures likely as the ground keeps shifting.
