ICE detained more than 500 US citizens, ProPublica report finds
A new investigation shows federal immigration agents have handcuffed, held at gunpoint, or detained hundreds of American citizens — bad news for the administration and for anyone who assumed citizenship was protection.
- ProPublica counted more than 500 US citizens handcuffed, held at gunpoint, or held against their will during Trump's second term.
- Nearly all of the citizens questioned about their status were people of color, and at least 70 were children or teenagers.
- A dozen citizens, mostly children, were deported outright, and more than 60 people were detained while legally filming agents.
- The researchers call their own count an undercount — one Idaho raid alone reportedly swept up 200 citizens, of whom only 30 could be named.
- Training requirements were cut to hire ICE agents fast, which helps explain the violent encounters, including two 17-year-olds beaten and detained in Alamo, Texas.
Outlook: Expect more cases to surface and growing political blowback heading into the midterms.
