Taipei prosecutors charge private investigators over surveillance of lawmaker Puma Shen
Taiwanese prosecutors have charged four private investigators with illegally tracking a sitting lawmaker and his family, in a case pointing to Hong Kong-linked interference in Taiwan.
- Four private investigators were charged in Taipei with breaking privacy law by watching DPP legislator Puma Shen around the clock.
- The surveillance also covered his wife and daughter, and ran through 2024.
- The work was commissioned by two people in Hong Kong, both now wanted by Taiwanese authorities.
- Prosecutors asked for a year and a half in prison for the lead investigator.
Outlook: The two Hong Kong clients remain at large, so the case will likely sharpen Taiwanese scrutiny of cross-border political surveillance.
