Hsu Chia-yin resigns as head of the Overseas Community Affairs Council

Oct 06, 2026

Overseas Community Affairs Council Minister Hsu Chia-yin has tendered her resignation, bad news for the governing team and the closing of one chapter in the political back-and-forth.

  • Hsu announced her resignation on the 7th, requested administrative and judicial investigations into herself, and pledged full cooperation.
  • The trigger was an accusation by the Taiwan People's Party caucus in the Legislative Yuan that she had used the resources of overseas missions to benefit her family.
  • She denied wasting public funds or seeking gains for her family, saying she had asked family and friends to help out when short-staffed, but had always acted in accordance with the law.
  • Both Lai Ching-te and Cho Jung-tai urged her to reconsider, but ultimately respected her decision; she said she was under no pressure of any kind.
  • A handover on National Day affairs is already under way to ensure the celebrations are not affected.

Outlook: Investigative proceedings will follow, and in the short term the Overseas Community Affairs Council must steady its overseas community work and National Day preparations amid the political climate ahead of the local elections.
