US congressional delegation visits Taiwan, will meet President Lai and Lin Chia-lung
A group of US lawmakers arrived in Taipei just before Taiwan's National Day, a show of support that is good news for Taiwan and another irritant for Beijing.
- House Budget Committee ranking Democrat Brendan Boyle is leading a delegation with representatives Andrea Salinas and Tim Kennedy on a visit through Thursday.
- The group will meet President Lai Ching-te, senior officials, and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.
- Talks will cover US-Taiwan ties, trade and tech cooperation, and regional security.
- Senator Michael Bennet is in Taiwan separately this week and will also meet senior officials.
- Boyle has pushed to end double taxation between the two sides and backed Taiwan joining international bodies such as Interpol.
Outlook: Expect more congressional traffic through Taipei around the National Day period, and the usual protests from China.
