Maui siblings create inclusive shop employing adults with disabilities
A brother-and-sister team in Wailuku has built a gift shop around jobs for adults with disabilities, a good-news story for families who struggle to find work options.
- Tiffany Chow and her brother Christian opened a retail shop on Maui that exists mainly to employ adults with disabilities.
- The idea came after Tiffany became her brother's main caregiver and saw how few options exist once college or a regular job is off the table.
- The shop sells jewelry, t-shirts, bags and other gifts, much of it made in-house by the staff.
- Jobs are matched to what each person is good at — making jewelry, running the register, handling the mail, picking the music.
- The store sits at Main and Market in Wailuku and is open Monday through Saturday, 10 to 4.
Outlook: The shop plans to keep growing its product lines so it can take on more workers with a wider range of abilities.
