Shen Po-yang's campaign team reported for alleged breach of Political Donations Act; fundraising supporter issues public apology
A fundraising controversy has emerged in the Taipei mayoral race. It is negative news for Democratic Progressive Party candidate Shen Po-yang, but the apology statement puts the responsibility back on an individual, which also takes some of the pressure off Shen's campaign office.
- A supporter raised funds for Shen Po-yang on his own initiative, while claiming he "had the consent of Shen's office" and displaying records of contact.
- Kuomintang Taoyuan City Councillor Ling Tao and others went to the Control Yuan to report Shen Po-yang's campaign team for a suspected violation of the Political Donations Act, calling for an investigation to be opened along the same lines as the earlier scrutiny of Chiang Wan-an.
- The supporter issued a public apology today, saying he had only spoken by phone for ten minutes with a switchboard assistant at Shen's office about details of video playback, had never mentioned fundraising, and had himself exaggerated "a phone call" into "obtaining consent."
- Figures in the pan-blue camp questioned whether this group of fundraisers is the same one behind illegal fundraising during last year's mass recall campaign, saying the methods are identical.
- The pan-blue camp also opened fire on other fronts the same day: a draft bill for a universal NT$20,000 cash handout was referred to the Finance Committee for review, while Jaw Shaw-kong criticised the Executive Yuan's refusal to countersign a bill passed by the Legislative Yuan as "utterly lawless."
Outlook: The next thing to watch is whether the Control Yuan accepts the complaint and opens an investigation. If Shen's office is found to have been involved, pressure on his campaign will rise markedly.
