Early morning fire at Leeward Drive-In in Waipahu
A two-alarm fire hit a strip mall in Waipahu early this morning, but nobody was hurt and crews have it under control.
- The fire broke out at the Leeward Drive-In on Pupukahi Street, just off Farrington Highway.
- Honolulu firefighters were called out before 4:30 a.m. and upgraded it to a second alarm within half an hour, pulling in double the usual trucks and crews.
- No one was inside the building when firefighters arrived, so there were no injuries.
- The strip mall sits right next to homes and across from a bank branch, which made the fire especially worrying while it burned.
- Crews have packed up their hoses and the smoke smell is fading, with Pupukahi Street still closed off.
Outlook: Investigators are now on scene to figure out what started the fire, with the cause expected to come out in the next day or two.
