Bull Fire burning fast near Reno
A new wildfire called the Bull Fire is spreading quickly northwest of Reno near Verdi, and people in one hillside neighborhood are being told to leave.
- The fire started in a small bowl in rough country with almost no roads, so crews cannot easily get engines to it.
- Air tankers and helicopters swarmed the fire within hours, dropping retardant to box in the spot where it started — an unusually heavy aerial response for Nevada.
- Crews are tying their lines into the nearby Hawk Fire burn scar, using already-burned ground as a firebreak.
- Evacuations are in place for the Somerset Ridge development in Verdi, where only one or two roads in and out can clog fast once fire trucks arrive.
- The fire grew past what first-response crews could catch, so hand crews and engine strike teams are being called in for a longer fight.
Outlook: Winds are light now but expected to pick up and shift later in the day, which is the main risk of the fire running further.
