99th annual Maui County Fair opens in Kahului
Maui's biggest yearly tradition is back for four days, with new food, rides and vendors — good news for families and local sellers.
- The 99th Maui County Fair opened with a parade at the University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului.
- It is the only county fair in the state this year, so it draws crowds from across the islands.
- New this year: a drone show, returning flying saucer rides, and a "Molokai Marketplace" with vendors brought over from Molokai.
- Food is the main draw, from poi mochi to a kulolo sundae, along with a livestock exhibit featuring cows, sheep, goats, pigs and guinea pigs.
- Gates run 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. the first two nights, with longer hours over the weekend.
Outlook: The fair runs through Sunday, with next year's 100th anniversary expected to be even bigger.
