Hawaii-made short film "Dasher" wins audience award in New York
Hawaii's film scene is getting a boost, with a locally made short winning over crowds in New York and a big Hollywood production now recruiting island talent.
- "Dasher," a short film about two Honolulu delivery workers scrambling through Christmas Eve, won the audience choice award at the Pacific Island Film Festival.
- Its creators, film school graduates Bryson Chun and Alexander Bashiri, each picked up $1,000 grants.
- Young actors in Hawaii can audition for the live-action Naruto movie, directed by Maui's Destin Daniel Cretton, through an open casting call closing October 9.
- Macklemore sold out his three-show European charity tour tied to his pro-Palestinian stance, after being dropped from Ed Sheeran's U.S. tour over the same comments; he says the money goes to Palestinian causes.
- Paris Fashion Week opened with a Celine Dion performance, her return to the stage after a three-year health break.
Outlook: Hawaii's local film talent is drawing more outside attention, and the Naruto casting search could put an island actor in a major Hollywood role.
