Hawaii is mourning Pat Saiki, a trailblazing lawmaker whose six decades of public service left a deep mark on the state.
- Saiki died peacefully at her Honolulu home at age 96.
- She was the first Republican Hawaii ever sent to Congress, winning in 1986 after 18 years in the state legislature.
- In Congress she was central to winning payments for Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants locked up during World War II.
- A former teacher, she started Hawaii's first teachers union and later ran the US Small Business Administration.
- She also helped create a sex abuse treatment center at Kapiolani Medical Center and a Kapiolani Community College campus near Diamond Head.
