Family remembers Kailua shooting victim Thomas Malone
A 30-year-old father was shot and killed in a Kailua parking lot, and a 24-year-old woman is now in custody — a grim story for the windward Oahu community that knew him.
- Thomas Malone was killed Saturday in the Target parking lot in Kailua after a fight between two groups spilled over from the Kailua Fall Festival.
- He was a father of three whose fourth child is due any day now.
- Friends and family have gathered at the spot for three days, leaving flowers, photos, notes, and his old Kaiser High School football jersey.
- Born and raised on the windward side, he won state titles in football, track, and soccer in a single year at Kaiser, later played football at City College of San Francisco, and most recently worked in the movie union.
- His father, Mike Malone, remembered him as a protector with a sense of humor who was first to help anyone who needed it.
Outlook: The 24-year-old woman in custody is expected to face charges as police continue investigating the fight that led to the shooting.
