Dongsha experience camp controversy — Hsu Chia-ching: I missed the appeal deadline, and the fine has been paid in full
Overseas Community Affairs Council Minister Hsu Chia-ching was fined NT$100,000 over her son's participation in an activity on Dongsha Island, a negative development for both her personally and the Democratic Progressive Party. The case has now entered prosecutorial and investigative proceedings.
- The Control Yuan found that Hsu Chia-ching had violated the Act on Recusal of Public Servants Due to Conflicts of Interest and imposed a fine of NT$100,000.
- Hsu Chia-ching said she was abroad and missed the deadline for filing an administrative appeal, and that the fine has already been paid in full.
- She stressed that she consulted legal experts both before and after the event, and in each case was told there was no benefit involved and no conflict of interest.
- The Taiwan People's Party has questioned whether the Dongsha ecology experience camp was tailor-made for her son, noting that the event was organised for four years but took place only last year.
- The Taiwan People's Party filed a complaint against her in August over alleged offences including profiteering, and the Taipei District Prosecutors Office has listed her as a defendant in a "Ta"-class case.
Outlook: With the case handed over to prosecutors and investigators, political sparring is set to continue in the near term, and whether charges are filed becomes the next key question.
