DOE partners with Dole Plantation to bring local pineapples to schools
Hawaii public schools are now serving locally grown pineapple, a small win for students and for local farmers.
- More than 2,100 pounds of Dole Plantation pineapple went out to schools across Oahu.
- Cafeterias are serving it as a breakfast fruit side and as a relish in chicken wraps.
- Students gave it good reviews, calling it fresh and juicy.
- Buying from local farms keeps the money in Hawaii's economy instead of paying for shipped-in produce.
Outlook: The state wants to expand local fruit and vegetable deals to schools beyond Oahu.
