Taiwan's opposition-controlled legislature voted down President Lai Ching-te's entire slate of watchdog nominees, a clear defeat for Lai and a show of force by the KMT-TPP bloc.

• None of them reached the 57 votes needed — more than half of all lawmakers — in the recorded vote.
• The KMT and TPP together hold enough seats to block Lai's appointments, and they used it on every name at once.
• The Control Yuan, which investigates and disciplines officials, now faces empty top posts.

Outlook: Lai will have to send up a new slate, and the opposition can keep blocking it until the two sides strike a deal.
