Taiwan's ruling party held a banquet to mark the 40th anniversary of its founding, and Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen made generational succession his central theme — a morale-boosting rally for DPP supporters.

• Shen said what he wants to take over from his predecessors is not a position or a brand name, but courage — running from the Kaohsiung Incident through the Wild Lily and Sunflower movements all the way to the Bluebird movement.

• Shen said the pace of his campaign was set when he announced his candidacy in May and has not been adjusted, and that Lai Ching-te told him to continue focusing on listening to public opinion.

Outlook: The year-end Taipei mayoral race will become a head-to-head contest between Shen and incumbent mayor Chiang Wan-an, with the DPP continuing to play the generational-change and sovereignty cards.
