Chinese coast guard vessels are operating with increasing frequency in the waters around Kinmen — bad news for cross-strait relations and for Kinmen's fishers alike.

• The China Coast Guard claims that since September it has been "carrying out routine law-enforcement patrols in accordance with the law" in waters near Kinmen, and in one video it hailed a Taiwanese coast guard cutter with Mid-Autumn wishes for family reunion.
• Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration rejected that account, saying Chinese coast guard vessels crossed into Kinmen's restricted waters 46 times last year under the pretext of "law-enforcement patrols," and 35 times so far this year — amounting in practice to "routine harassment."
• The Coast Guard Administration stressed that Taiwan and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to one another, and that Beijing is using the festive mood and emotive rhetoric to wage cognitive warfare, seeking to obscure the fact that it is unilaterally undermining the status quo.
• Officials called on Beijing to halt harassment that could escalate confrontation immediately, and pledged round-the-clock deployment of vessels to monitor the area and safeguard fishers' right to work.

Outlook: Friction in Kinmen's restricted waters is unlikely to ease in the near term, the number of Chinese coast guard patrols could exceed last year's total, and the maritime standoff across the Strait looks set to keep intensifying.
