Foxconn pushes next-gen AI optical interconnects; quantum dot lasers could reach systems in 2–3 years
Foxconn is moving deeper into the high-speed optical links that AI data centers depend on, a positive signal for the company's AI hardware ambitions and for Taiwan's role in the AI supply chain.
- Foxconn's research arm, working with its connector unit Foxconn Interconnect (FIT), has built silicon photonics into 800G and 1.6T optical transceiver modules — the parts that move data between AI servers.
- The next step is quantum dot lasers paired with multi-core fiber, which lab tests show can push huge amounts of data through a single channel and over distances of up to 2 kilometers.
- Quantum dot lasers could show up in some AI server systems within 2–3 years, with wider adoption taking 3–5 years, but only if system makers decide to adopt them.
- The tech is still at the demo stage with no industry standard or platform behind it yet, and the coming 400G-per-channel generation still needs better signal-processing chips and supply-chain support before it goes commercial.
