China's Military Buildup Is Bigger Than It Looks
China's military has grown into a force that can now match or outbuild the United States in ships, fighter jets, missiles, and drones — bad news for Taiwan, the US, and its Pacific allies, though China has never actually fought a modern war.
- China's navy already has more warships than the US and is on track for 50% more by 2030, backed by shipyards that build 200 ships for every one America builds.
- Stealth fighter production is close to catching up with the F-35 line, a sixth-generation jet is already flying in prototype form, and the nuclear arsenal has doubled since 2020 with parity to the US and Russia expected by 2035.
- China leads the world in drone warfare: AI-run swarms of hundreds of drones under a single operator, drone mother ships, robot wolves, and cheap kamikaze drones built for half of what Iran pays.
- China's real weapon is factory capacity: it has twice as many large factories as Russia has of any size, and could flood Taiwan with 10,000 drones a night if it shifted to a war economy.
- The weak spots are real but not about hardware: no combat since 1984, party commissars second-guessing commanders, and Xi's purges gutting top leadership.
Outlook: In a short war China's flaws might decide it, but the longer any fight drags on, the more its production advantage tilts the odds toward Beijing.
