Taiwan's plan to donate a retired coast guard ship to the Philippines has sparked a political fight, and the pushback is mostly good news for closer Taiwan–Philippines maritime ties.

• Taiwan's coast guard will gift a decommissioned 500-ton patrol and rescue ship to the Philippines, and Taiwanese coast guard vessels will make a first-ever goodwill visit there in October.
• KMT lawmaker Ma Wen-chun objected, citing the 2013 Guang Da Xing No. 28 incident, when Philippine officers shot and killed a Taiwanese fisherman, and asked where Taiwan's "national dignity" went.
• Taiwan AI Labs founder Ethan Tu pushed back, saying Taiwan got everything it demanded after 2013: sanctions forced a formal Philippine apology, compensation for the family, and a Manila court convicted all eight coast guard officers of homicide with sentences up to 14 years.
• The incident also led to a 2015 Taiwan–Philippines fisheries enforcement agreement banning unnecessary force and setting up hotlines and quick-release rules, and both sides held their eighth working-group meeting on it as recently as May.
• Tu argued the real loss of dignity comes from politicians attacking Taiwan for building ties with friendly countries outside Beijing's orbit.

Outlook: The ship transfer and October visit are expected to go ahead, marking a shift from the 2013 bloodshed toward a formal Taiwan–Philippines maritime partnership, though the KMT will likely keep using the issue to attack the government.
